CYANIDE MANAGEMENT  

There has been a renewed interest in developing and implementing cyanide management codes and guidelines for the mining and metal finishing industries.  Below are links to some of the more prominent cyanide management codes and guidelines.

Voluntary cyanide management code for the gold and silver mining industries developed by the International Cyanide Management Institute.

Guidelines for Storage, Handling and Distribution of Alkali Cyanides
The European Cyanide Sector Group recently published a guidance document dealing with the many aspects of cyanide management.  This is a useful reference document in conjunction with other cyanide management codes and guidance documents.

Cyanide Management Videos
Following completion of six regional workshops in 2003 on cyanide management for the gold industry, four videos have been produced by the Australian Centre for Minerals Extension and Research (ACMER).  Topics covered include Cyanide Facts, Risk, Health and Emergency Response, Site Management of Cyanide, and the International Cyanide Management Code.

Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Precious Minerals Mining
The United Nations International Finance Corporation (IFC) issued draft "Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Precious Minerals Mining" in July 2004 for public comment. This document contains proposed guidance for cyanide levels in various mine-related waters.

European Union Proposed Guidelines
In February 2003, the European Union (EU) presented a draft document titled "Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Management of Waste from the Extractive Industries".  Article 13 of this proposed directive considers a tiered phase-in of WAD cyanide limitations for mine tailings at levels of 50, 25 and 10 mg/L.
